Los Angeles β World Cup 2026 City Guide
Los Angeles is hosting 8 matches at SoFi Stadium, making it one of the most active host cities of the tournament. Between the near-perfect weather, the sprawling city, and the fact that SoFi is genuinely one of the best modern football venues on the planet, LA is a strong base for fans chasing multiple games. Here's how to make it work.
Getting to the Stadium
SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, about 6 miles southeast of LAX airport. Despite being a world-class venue, getting there without a car requires a little planning.
By public transit: Take the Metro C Line (Green Line) to the Hawthorne/Lennox station, then transfer to the Inglewood Transit Connect Shuttle that runs directly to SoFi on match days. The full journey from downtown LA (7th Street/Metro Center) takes around 45-50 minutes. A TAP card covers all Metro fares β load one at any Metro station.
From LAX specifically: The LAX FlyAway bus or Metro connections from the new LAX/Metro Transit Center (opened 2023) link the airport to the Metro system. From there, take the C Line toward Redondo Beach and follow the match-day shuttle signs.
By car/rideshare: Uber and Lyft surge pricing on match days can be brutal β expect $40-80 each way from downtown. If driving, SoFi has 12,000+ parking spaces but lots fill early; pre-purchase parking through the official SoFi app. Budget at least 45 minutes to exit post-match.
Walking from Inglewood: The Forum, Kia Forum, and surrounding areas are walkable from the Metro station. The SoFi campus itself is about 10 minutes on foot from Hawthorne/Lennox.
Where to Stay
LA sprawls 50+ miles, so location matters more here than almost any other host city.
Inglewood / Hawthorne (closest to stadium): New hotels have opened near the stadium since the Rams moved in. Rates are $180-280/night during the tournament but you're a 10-minute walk from the venue. Inglewood has improved significantly since SoFi opened.
Downtown LA: Good transit connections, wide range of hotels from $150/night budget options on South Figueroa up to $400+/night at the JW Marriott. The Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) area has plenty of pre/post-match bar options.
Hollywood / West Hollywood: More character, easier to explore the city, but 25-35 minutes by Metro to the stadium. Budget $200-350/night. Better for fans who want to do more than just match days.
Cheaper alt-city options: Long Beach and Inglewood itself are 10-15 miles south and run $30-60/night cheaper than equivalent hotels in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills. See our alt-city savings guide for more detail. Long Beach has its own airport (LGB) with domestic connections, which can be a useful entry point.
Match Day Experience
SoFi Stadium is a $5.5 billion purpose-built venue with a translucent roof that provides shade while keeping the atmosphere enclosed. Capacity for World Cup matches will be around 75,000. The sightlines from every seat are genuinely excellent β there are no bad angles.
Inside the stadium: Food options are far better than a typical American football venue. Expect tacos, birria, pupusas, and Korean BBQ alongside standard stadium fare β LA's food diversity carries over. Prices are stadium-steep ($16-20 for a meal) but quality is there. Beer is sold throughout, which isn't true of all WC 2026 venues.
Fan zones: LA has confirmed a FIFA Fan Festival site near Downtown LA β likely at Grand Park or the LA Live entertainment complex. This is where you want to be for pre-match atmosphere if you're not near Inglewood. LA Live has multiple bars and restaurants and gets loud on big sports nights.
Atmosphere: LA crowds tend to warm up slowly but South American and Mexican fans will dominate the atmosphere whenever their teams play here. The Latino football community in LA is enormous β expect proper atmosphere for any match involving CONCACAF or CONMEBOL nations.
Between Matches: What to Do
Griffith Observatory: Free entry, panoramic views over the entire basin, the Hollywood sign in the frame. Take the DASH bus from Los Feliz β don't drive, parking is a nightmare. Best at sunset.
The Getty Center: Free museum with one of the best art collections in the US and views over the city. Take the free tram from the parking structure. Tuesday to Sunday, closed Monday.
Venice Beach and Abbot Kinney Blvd: Walk the boardwalk from Santa Monica pier south to Venice, then cut inland to Abbot Kinney for independent coffee shops, food, and boutiques. The whole loop takes a half day.
Dodger Stadium: If the Dodgers are playing a home game during your visit β go. It's one of the great stadium experiences in sport, the views of the San Gabriel Mountains are spectacular, and the Dodger Dog is genuinely iconic.
Local Food & Drink
Birria tacos: The birria taco explosion started in LA and it's still done best here. Teddy's Red Tacos in Mar Vista and Burritos La Palma in Bell are both outstanding. Dip the corn tortilla in the consomme broth β that's the move.
Ktown BBQ: Koreatown is a 10-minute Uber from downtown and among the best Korean BBQ neighborhoods outside Seoul. Park's BBQ on Vermont is the classic choice β order the galbi and brisket, go on a weeknight to avoid weekend waits.
Grand Central Market: Downtown at 317 S Broadway, this indoor market has operated since 1917. Eggslut (breakfast sandwiches), Wexler's Deli (pastrami), and Tacos Tumbras a Tomas are all worth your time. Go at lunch, not dinner β shorter lines.
Practical Tips
Weather: Mid-June to mid-July temperatures sit around 25-28Β°C with almost no rain. Mornings can be overcast (June Gloom is real) but it usually burns off by midday. Sunscreen is not optional β the UV index is high even on cloudy days.
Getting around: LA without a car is manageable but requires patience. The Metro covers downtown, Hollywood, Koreatown, Santa Monica (E Line), and LAX. Uber/Lyft fill the gaps. Renting a car makes sense if you're going to the beach communities or the Valley, but parking costs add up fast.
Cash vs card: Card is accepted almost everywhere. Carry $40-60 in small bills for street tacos, parking tips, and markets β vendors at Grand Central Market and street stalls often prefer cash.
Safety: Downtown LA and Skid Row adjacent areas have a visible homeless population; stay aware. Tourist areas (Hollywood Blvd, Santa Monica, Venice) are safe but watch for petty theft in crowded spots. Inglewood has improved significantly since SoFi opened and is fine on match days.
Spanish: LA is effectively a bilingual city. Basic Spanish phrases are useful and always appreciated in restaurants and markets outside the tourist belt.
