Seattle β€” World Cup 2026 City Guide

Seattle is hosting 5 matches at Lumen Field and it might be the most underrated host city of the tournament. The weather in June and July is genuinely the best of any US venue β€” warm, dry, and clear. Lumen Field is walkable from downtown hotels. The food scene punches well above the city's size. And unlike some host cities, Seattle actually has a passionate football (soccer) culture built around the Seattle Sounders, one of MLS's biggest clubs.

Getting to the Stadium

Lumen Field is located on the southern edge of downtown Seattle, on 1st Avenue South between S King Street and S Lander Street. This is the key advantage Seattle has over almost every other host city: the stadium is in the city.

On foot from downtown: From Pike Place Market it's a 20-minute walk south along 1st Avenue. From Pioneer Square it's under 10 minutes. From most downtown hotels you can walk to the match β€” no transit needed.

By light rail from the airport: Take the Link Light Rail from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) directly to Stadium Station, which is immediately outside Lumen Field's south entrance. The journey takes 38-42 minutes and costs $3.25. Trains run every 8-10 minutes during peak hours. This is genuinely one of the best airport-to-stadium transit connections at any World Cup venue globally.

By King County Metro: Multiple bus routes serve the stadium area from neighborhoods across the city. Route 21, 22, and 36 connect from West Seattle; routes 7 and 36 come from the Rainier Valley. Check the Metro trip planner at metro.kingcounty.gov.

By car: There is parking near the stadium but it's limited and prices surge on match days ($30-60). Park-and-ride at Tukwila International Blvd station and take Link Rail north β€” it's faster and cheaper than driving in.

Where to Stay

Seattle is compact enough that staying almost anywhere downtown puts you in walking or easy transit distance of the stadium.

Downtown / Belltown: The closest walkable neighborhood to Lumen Field. Hotels range from $180/night at the Graduate Seattle to $380+/night at the Thompson Seattle. The Belltown block has bars, restaurants, and Pike Place is minutes away. Best all-round option.

Capitol Hill: Seattle's most vibrant neighborhood β€” LGBTQ+ friendly, excellent independent restaurants and bars, and connected downtown by a 10-minute light rail ride. Hotels run $150-250/night; short-term rentals in the area are excellent value.

South Lake Union: Tech-heavy neighborhood north of downtown, newer hotel stock. The Hyatt and Marriott properties here are comfortable and well-priced at $170-280/night. Amazon's Spheres are nearby if that's your thing.

Pioneer Square: The historic heart of the city, directly adjacent to the stadium. Excellent pre/post-match location. Boutique hotels and apartment rentals. Can be quiet (in a good way) on non-match days.

There is no strong case for an alt-city strategy in Seattle β€” the proximity of the stadium to downtown makes staying in the city the right call.

Match Day Experience

Lumen Field has a reputation as the loudest outdoor stadium in the NFL, and the closed roof structure creates an acoustic chamber that World Cup fans will notice immediately. The Sounders have spent 15+ years building a supporter culture here β€” the Emerald City Supporters and Gorilla FC sections both know how to create atmosphere.

Inside the stadium: Capacity for World Cup is approximately 68,000. Lumen Field has recently renovated its concourse food options. Expect Pacific Northwest fare β€” smoked salmon, Dungeness crab chowder, local craft beers from Pike Brewing and Elysian. It's legitimately good stadium food.

Pre-match fan culture: The area around Occidental Square and the International District (ID) fills with fans on Sounders match days and World Cup will be the same on a larger scale. The bars on Occidental Ave S (The Chieftain, BOCA, Pyramid Alehouse at 1201 1st Ave S) are traditional pre-match spots.

FIFA Fan Festival: Seattle's fan zone is expected near Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle) β€” a 10-minute walk or monorail ride from downtown. International Fountain at Seattle Center is a natural gathering point.

Between Matches: What to Do

Pike Place Market: Go early (before 10am) to see the fish throwers before the tourist crowds arrive. The original Starbucks is here (expect a queue) but the real reason to come is the produce, the flower stalls, Rachel the Pig, and the original farmers' market atmosphere. Free to enter; budget $20-30 for food and coffee.

Chihuly Garden and Glass: Adjacent to the Space Needle, this museum houses Dale Chihuly's extraordinary glass sculptures in indoor galleries and an outdoor garden. Worth every dollar of the $32 entry. One of the better art experiences in the Pacific Northwest.

Kerry Park: A small park on the south slope of Queen Anne Hill with the definitive postcard view of the Seattle skyline with Mount Rainier behind it on clear days. Walk up or take the 3/4 bus from downtown. Free. Best in the afternoon when the light is good.

Ferry to Bainbridge Island: The Washington State Ferry from Colman Dock (2 blocks from Pike Place) takes 35 minutes to Bainbridge Island. $10 round trip as a foot passenger. Walk around the small town, eat at Mora Ice Creamery, and catch the ferry back. One of the best half-day activities in the Pacific Northwest.

Local Food & Drink

Pacific Dungeness crab: Seattle's best seafood is the Dungeness crab. Taylor Shellfish Oyster Bar in Capitol Hill (Capitol Hill location at 1521 Melrose Ave E) does crab by the pound alongside local oysters. Order a dozen Kumamoto oysters and a crab to share β€” it's messy and perfect.

Pho in the International District: Seattle's ID (International District, also called Chinatown) on the southeast edge of downtown is one of the best Vietnamese food concentrations outside of Vietnam. Pho Bac Sup Shop on 12th Ave S serves the real thing β€” rich broth, proper tendon, fragrant herbs. Under $15 for a bowl.

Salumi Artisan Cured Meats: Mario Batali's parents opened this Pioneer Square institution decades ago and it remains the city's best sandwich counter. The muffuletta and cured meat plates are outstanding. Only open Tuesday-Friday for lunch β€” plan around it.

Practical Tips

Weather: Seattle in June-July is the city's finest season. Temperatures average 21-24Β°C, rainfall is rare (July is Seattle's driest month), and the days are very long β€” sunset doesn't come until 9pm in mid-June. The reputation for Seattle rain is based on the October-March period; summer is genuinely beautiful.

Layers: Even in summer, mornings and evenings can drop to 13-15Β°C. A light jacket in your bag is never wasted, though you likely won't need it during matches.

Card vs cash: Seattle is extremely card-friendly. Most coffee shops, markets, and restaurants are tap-to-pay or card-only. Carry $20-30 in cash for Pike Place Market vendors and tips.

Getting around beyond downtown: Seattle's hills make it less walkable in some directions, but the Link Light Rail covers the airport and major neighborhoods efficiently. The streetcar runs along First Hill and South Lake Union. Capitol Hill and the U-District are both light rail stops.

Tipping: Standard US tipping culture applies β€” 18-20% in restaurants, $1-2/drink at bars. Digital card readers prompt for tips, which can feel awkward; 18% is fine.
